The Firefighter Cancer Working Group is led by Division of Fire Safety Director Michael Desrochers and aids in assembling information to be reported to the legislature. S.73 of the 2023-2024 legislative session (passed as Act 26) calls for the Director of the Division of Fire Safety to report to several legislative committees on the following items:
- costs associated with annual or biennial firefighter cancer screening,
- opportunities for the State to reduce the cost to fire departments for cancer screening,
- the cost for the State to replace firefighter PPE on a rotating basis every 10 years,
- opportunities for the State to reduce the cost to fire departments for the replacement of PPE,
- recommendations to facilitate early identification of cancer in firefighters,
- recommendation to facilitate acquisition of PPE by fire departments,
- recommendation to eliminate PFAS and other carcinogens in firefighting equipment
