Firefighter Cancer Working Group

This working group is not currently active but may be called upon in the future as needed.

The Firefighter Cancer Working Group is led by Division of Fire Safety Director Michael Desrochers and aids in assembling information to be reported to the legislature. S.73 of the 2023-2024 legislative session (passed as Act 26) calls for the Director of the Division of Fire Safety to report to several legislative committees on the following items:

costs associated with annual or biennial firefighter cancer screening,
opportunities for the State to reduce the cost to fire departments for cancer screening,
the cost for the State to replace firefighter PPE on a rotating basis every 10 years,
opportunities for the State to reduce the cost to fire departments for the replacement of PPE,
recommendations to facilitate early identification of cancer in firefighters,
recommendation to facilitate acquisition of PPE by fire departments,
recommendation to eliminate PFAS and other carcinogens in firefighting equipment
