Prerequisites
Current certifications in Responder Hazardous Materials Operations, Firefighter II, Fire and Emergency Services Instructor I, and ICS-200.
Program Format
This program will be delivered in a hybrid/blended format. Students will meet both in-person and virtually through a remote learning platform. A significant portion of the program work will be completed individually online. Students must have access to a reliable high-speed internet connection and a suitable device with a microphone and camera for completing online program work and joining virtual class meetings. Each student must have their own device for connecting to virtual class meetings.
Course Description
This program provides current and aspiring Fire Officers timely information that aids in the performance as a company officer. This educationally sound, objective-based program addresses and complies with the National Fire Protection Association Standard, NFPA 1021, Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications, 2020 Edition. Topics covered include understanding and application of leadership and management theories, leading a team, management of community relations and risk reduction, fire department administration, pre-incident planning and code enforcement, safety and risk management, fire cause determination, and commanding initial and major incidents.
As a part of the certification process, the program includes a project component where the participants complete 11 projects on assigned topics based on their own fire department's protocol, policies, and practices. This is an academically demanding program where 40 to 80 hours of work are required in addition to the hours shown on the class schedule.

To register, download the General Admission Application, fill it out, and return it to the Vermont Fire Academy. Please send applications and certifications to: DPS.VFAApplications@vermont.gov.
Due to program demand, seats will be awarded to applicants based on fair department disbursement. An applicant's Chief or Training Officer may be consulted during the decision-making process. Priority will go to Vermont Firefighters. The class minimum is 12 students who are sponsored by a Vermont Fire Department by the application deadline and the class maximum is 20 students.
