1800 - 2200 weeknights

Students will need a computer and internet access for classroom assignments.

This program is designed for individuals who want to develop the knowledge and skills to deliver instruction effectively from a prepared lesson plan. Students will learn how to use instructional aids and evaluation instruments, adapt lesson plans to the unique requirements of the students, organize the learning environment so that learning is maximized, and meet the recordkeeping requirements of the authority having jurisdiction. Students will gain experience instructing cognitive and psychomotor lessons using methodologies geared toward adult learners. 

This program requires additional work outside of class time to complete work and develop presentations, which will be delivered during class. 

Upon successful completion, students are awarded nationally registered Pro Board certification in accordance with NFPA 1041, Fire Service Instructor Professional Qualifications, 2019 edition.

Prerequisites:

  • Currently active with three years of experience in fire or emergency services.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current Firefighter I or EMS licensure at the EMT, Advanced EMT, or Paramedic level.

To register, download the General Admission Application, fill it out and return it to the Vermont Fire Academy by the registration deadline. Applications can be emailed to: dps.vfaapplications@vermont.gov. Priority will go to Vermont Firefighters. Applicants who are EMS providers and not Firefighters must submit a copy of their EMS license with the general admission application. The class minimum is 8 students and the class maximum is 20 students.

Fire Instructor I Certification is a prerequisite for Fire Officer Certification and required for employment as a Vermont Fire Academy Instructor. Fire Instructor I Certification may lead to Vermont EMS Instructor/Coordinator licensure with completion of the Vermont EMS Instructor/Coordinator Bridge Course.
