Course Description:  The purpose of this two-day course is provide skills that individuals in positions of authority can use to exercise leadership when confronted with adaptive challenges.  The goal of this course is for participants to develop an understanding of skills associated with exercising leadership to resolve adaptive problems, those problems where the solution is either unknown or requires significant change, or both.

Decision Making for Initial Company Operations - Poultney

Location: Poultney Fire Department

Course Description:  This two-day course is designed to develop the decision-making skills needed by Company Officers (COs) to accomplish assigned tactics at structure fires. With the real possibility of being the first to arrive at an incident, the CO's initial decisions will have an impact throughout the entire incident.  It is vital that COs be able to make good management decisions that have a favorable impact on the eventual outcome.  In addition to a possible role as the initial Incident Commander, the CO may well be assigned a subordinate position within the Incident Command System organization.  CO's need to have a clear understanding of the system, the position that they are assigned to, and their role in the organization if they are to function effectively and help make the system work. 

Leadership - Creating Environments for Professional Growth - Brattleboro

Course Description:
This two-day course presents the fire service supervisors with the basic leadership skills and tools needed to perform effectively in the fire service environment. The course includes concepts related to a successful transition to supervisory and leadership roles, including concepts of adaptive leadership; change management; active followership; effective communication, including difficult
conversations and advocacy- inquiry based dialogue; ethics; authority; power; decision- making; and active engagement
through development of a personal plan.

Strategy and Tactics for Initial Company Operations - Alburgh

Location: Alburgh Fire Department

Course Description:
This two-day course is designed to meet the needs of Company Officers  responsible for managing the operations of one or more companies during structural firefighting operations. This course is designed to develop the management skills needed by Company Officers to accomplish assigned tactics at structure fires.

Fire Officer I/II - Vermont Fire Academy

Location: Vermont Fire Academy, 93 Davison Drive, Pittsford

Time: Weeknights: 1800 - 2200 / Weekends: 0800 - 1630

Prerequisites
Current certifications in Responder Hazardous Materials Operations, Firefighter II, Fire and Emergency Services Instructor I, and ICS-200.

Program Format
This program will be delivered in a hybrid/blended format. Students will meet both in-person and virtually through a remote learning platform. A significant portion of the program work will be completed individually online. Students must have frequent access to a reliable high-speed internet connection and a suitable device with a microphone and camera for completing online program work and joining virtual class meetings. Each student must have their own device for connecting to virtual class meetings.

Course Description
This program provides the current and aspiring Fire Officers timely information that aids in the performance as a company officer. This educationally sound, objective-based program addresses and complies with the National Fire Protection Association Standard, NFPA 1021, Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications, 2014 Edition. Topics covered include developing the proper mind set, accountability and responsibility, cultural diversity, safety and wellness, crew resource management, public relations, functional leadership, incident command, affirmative action issues, the budgeting process, strategic planning, and strategy and tactics.  \

As a part of the certification process, the program includes a project component where the participants complete 12 projects on assigned topics based on their own fire departments protocol, policies, and practices. This is an academically demanding program where 40 to 80 hours of work is required in addition to the hours shown on the class schedule.  

Program Registration
To register, download the General Admission Application, fill it out and return it to the Vermont Fire Academy. Please send applications and certifications to: DPS.VFAApplications@vermont.gov

Due to program demand, seats will be awarded to applicants based on fair department disbursement and the applicant's need for certification. An applicant's Chief or Training Officer may be consulted during the decision making process. Priority will go to Vermont Firefighters. The class minimum is 12 students who are sponsored by a Vermont Fire Department by the application deadline and the class maximum is 20 students.
