Rental Housing Health and Safety

On June 7,2022 Act 181 was signed into law transferring townVermont’s Rental Health and Safety Code previously administered by local municipal Heath Officers to the Division of Fire Safety.  The program is a complaint-based system designed to ensure rental housing is maintained in a safe and healthy manner.

The Division of Fire Safety is committed to protecting Vermonters and guests who visit our great State by educating landlords and tenants of their responsibilities to foster a safe and healthy environment.

This web page provides valuable resources for landlords and tenants and provides guidance on how to properly file a complaint. This page also shows the minimal health and safety standards that are required to be complied with.
