Firefighter health is at the forefront of many of today’s discussions and ongoing scientific research. Preventing injuries and illnesses in our first responder population has become a paramount issue for fire service leaders.

The City of Rutland Fire Department in partnership with the Vermont Fire Academy will be hosting a 1-day training event focused on firefighter health and safety. This training will boil down the complexities of firefighter health research into an easy to understand presentation that focuses on a step-by-step algorithm of how to reduce firefighter risk and improve overall fireground performance and safety.

Chief Craig Haigh and Dr. Denise Smith will explore the physiological demands that firefighters face including cardiovascular strain combined with heavy physical work, heat stress, and psychological stress based upon research performed at Skidmore College. Together, they will explain how risks can be mitigated before, during, and after an incident. Topics will include rehabilitation, options for building a rehabilitation team, fire scene decontamination, and firefighter cancer prevention.

This presentation will interest firefighters and EMS providers alike.

Registration:  Pre-registration is required by submitting a General Admission Application to the Vermont Fire Academy by October 11, 2019.

Cost:  This event is free of charge and includes lunch.  Lunch and break refreshments will be provided through the sponsorship of Rutland County Fire Mutual Aid.
