Fire Inspector I Orientation - Hartford

Orientation: October 24, 2019 at 8:30 a.m. at Hartford Fire Station
Class Location: Hartford Town Hall, 171 Bridge Street, White River Junction
Application Deadline: October 10, 2019 at 4:00 P.M.
Students may apply by submitting a completed General Admission Application to the Vermont Fire Academy by the application deadline. Seats will be awarded by equal department disbursement. A minimum of 15 students must be registered for this course to be held. Program maximum is 20 students.
This program is based on NFPA 1031, Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Inspector and Plan Examiner. A beginning level program for those wishing to become involved in the aspect of fire prevention and inspections. This program is primarily designed for those performing fire service inspections and would be extremely useful to state and municipal inspectors and company level fire officers. Some of the topics covered in this program include report writing and record keeping, building construction, identifying occupancy types, understanding fire growth, performing inspections, occupancy safety and evacuation plans, introduction to building systems, and fire protection systems. Participants will study the proper handling and storage of hazardous materials and gain an understanding of safe housekeeping practices.
This program includes many activities that will assist in the development of Code interpretation and application skills. The most commonly applied Codes and Standards will be reviewed in detail with an emphasis on NFPA 1, Fire Code and NFPA 101, Life Safety Code.

Prerequisite:Hazardous Materials Awareness Certification. Students who meet this prerequisite must submit a copy of their certificate with their General Admission Application. Those without this certification must attend that class on orientation day.

Certification Exam: Successful completion of this program will qualify the student to take the Pro Board Certification Exam for Fire Inspector I. The Fire Inspector I Certification Exam consists of a 100-question written exam and a practicum project submittal. The project requires the candidate to perform and document fire inspections in the field under the supervision of a preceptor.
Student manuals are not returnable after Orientation. The sponsoring department will be charged for the cost of the student manual if a student fails to complete the program.
Students must be 18 years of age at the start date of the program that they are enrolling in.
